History of Rolfing

Structural Integration, also known to many as Rolfing, is my passion.

The founder of this field was Ida Rolf who held her PhD. in Bio Chemistry from Columbia University. She worked under the Rockefeller Institute in the Departments of Chemotherapy and Organic Chemistry. She also spent her free time studying mathematics, atomic physics, and homeopathy.
Her personal health matters took her to look outside of the medical field. Yoga, chiropractics, osteopathy, and the Alexander technique to name a few paths she followed. She continued to search and work with Fritz Perls of Gestalt Therapy.
Dr. Rolf came to believe the body is best when the bones are in alignment. Imbalance in structure causes the body's soft tissue misalignment to compensate and create long term illness patterns.
Through this Dr. Rolf developed her own style and developed ten sessions, known as the Ten Series work on all parts of the body. She wrote, published, and taught others soft tissue manipulation and movement education until her death in 1979.

Here are steps to immediately begin to help your body and understand more about the Rolfing practice:

Many thanks to the Guild of Structural Integration for all their support and for continuing to carry on the teachings of Ida p. Rolf. My work would not be the same without my continuing mentorship from Neal Powers over the years, thank you for all you do. Special thanks for Lynda Richardson, Dr. Dorothy Nolte, Kalyan Gilliam, and Karen Sallovitz. And thanks to my son Lee Ballard and my daughter Fabienne Bisaro.
